Another Colab classic very much to my taste. I love the smoky flow of CSM’s voice against that gorgeous backing track with its momentum and little breaks. Wonderful. xxxx

Thanks Miss Burns. I completed this late last night on my headphones and wasn’t at all sure what it was going to sound like in the morning - so it’s nice to get a friendly comment first thing. :)

this is ‘blue note’ stuff mikael. rich, smoky w/ melody’s voice so real you have to flinch. and the band’s got all four burners on. one suggestion: i’d drop the gain on the brush snare by .5db, but that’s just me talkin’. 798’s.

And thank you for talking - I greatly value that sort of feedback.

I mixed this more like a dance track - compressed within an inch of its life - which made the mixing needlessly complicated.

Re: vocals - she has such incredible presence in this recording. The channel balance isn’t perfect though, and I mucked that up a bit the stereo field. Glad to hear it still sounds good.

Thanks again - much appreciated.

CSM is one of my favorite voices here at ccM and you’ve done her proud with this excellent mix, the buoyancy acting as counterpart to her lower octave Abby Lincoln sensibilities. Another in a long string of quality uploads.

Thanks for that - I very much appreciate it.

Yeah, I’m a fan too. More character per square inch than pretty much anyone else.

I tried to do something different with this track and combine traditional instruments/playing with something more dance-y. This track inspired the hell out of me with that approach, BTW.

Thanks again.

I have a blackberry and sometimes, when I cannot sleep, I’ll turn on my phone, making sure it is on silent mode, and check my messages. Can you imagine how hard it is to go back to sleep when I get a middle-of-the-night notification of a colab upload?

Spooky and bending. I’m with agreement with panu on the crinkle of the brushes, but then again, that could just be my cheap speakers/headphones.

And can you imagine how hard it is to go to sleep when you’re working on a track with CSM vocals and can’t quit just yet? Pretty hard.

Except I think I need to go back to revisit this one. It was very quick work (as always), and now it seems like a few small critters managed to sneak into it while I wasn’t paying attention. :)

Thanks for the thumbs up anyway. Wonderful vocals, and I just had to get this track out of my system.

Thank you. good luck getting the tune out of your head. It was part of the reason why I was awake at 3 a.m. It was looping and looping … once started had to play out. argh …. fellow sufferer

I’ve written this many times: Ms. CiggiBurns creates the most interesting and relevant tags around here. I think “classic_colab” ought to be a tag, Mikael. This is a really smooth track.

Hahah - yes, I agree. She has a knack for coming up with stupendelicious words in her reviews. :)

Thanks Ivan.

I like it when you do genre bending. It ends up like a 2010 Bluenote sort of thing. I think this is sligtly edgy for being you but you’ve maintained your great sensibility when it comes to harmonies. This is a top class recording. Mmmm….so many good new uploads here today.

Thanks Per. I’ve listened to it with fresh ears (and different headphones) a few times today and am feeling pretty good about the idea, and pretty bad about the production. But one out of two isn’t terrible. :)

Thanks for the thumbs up and review - much appreciated.

I love how you’ve arranged this. I think torch songs are the toughest thing to try and interpret with a backing track, and the creative and melodic rhodes work on this, combined with the ska-like rhythm nails it.

Thanks - that pretty much exactly sums up what I was going through.

I wanted to balance the very gentle vocals with the more intense piano/drums. Especially the piano - I was pounding the keys to record it, and then brought the volume and EQ way down to temper it so that I could capture the attitude of it without overwhelming the track.

Thanks for the review - very much appreciated.

Fantastic. I like the scratchy ska feel (is that another tag?), and the space you’ve left for the voice to come through.

If I were to get into being picky about the production, the only thing that slightly bothers me is that the high level of compression causes the voice to come and go in places.

Right you are. The compression is a huge part of that.

It also emphasized a few other issues I had created. The vocals have a right-field bias and shift a bit, so I played with centering them while also widening the sound - but ended up with a bit of a wobbly stereo feel.

I’ll go back and have a look at what I can do.

Thanks for the review though - very much appreciated.

Oh, and I think this song is bi-curious, so you might be in luck.

Veeeery nice that open introduction with galaxies of space. The introduction of the kick is reallywell placed _ imho of course. Starts of colabish indeed, but by the time the beat has taken of well that same colabishness moves to the background. As far as i’m concerned anyway.

Ahh yes. I wanted to do something that combines the e-keys thing I like to do with the more electronic thing I also like to do. I think I’ll stick doing this for a while now.

Thanks for the thumbs up.

Thanks J - really appreciate it.

I tried to blend a few elements/styles in this track and have to admit that at one point I wasn’t sure at all about where the heck it was going - so it means a lot to get the positive feedback.

Yes - very glad you mentioned MCJitB.

I mentioned to him earlier in the week that I’d seen a couple of references in reviews that people had discovered music through his show. Putting up a podcast can be an incredibly thankless job, so it’s very nice to see that it has an impact on people.

Oh. And thanks for the review. :)

This is terrific! I loved how you started out kind of “slow” but then subtly add different elements throughout the mix. The mid-section when you throw in that guitar… It was clear how much fun you were having on this. And great solo work on the keyboard!

Thanks much - in the end it turned out to be a lot of fun, but there was a point where I was going off in the completely wrong direction. But once I got the idea for the piano and was pounding away on that, the rest came together very quickly. :)

Thanks for going back to listen to this one, and thanks for leaving a comment.

Thanks - really appreciate the mention about the build-up because it was one of the things I was trying to pull off just the right balance with.

Thanks for taking the time to leave a review.
